Shirley Ong
M.A.
Senior Doctoral Associate
I am a Ph.D Candidate in the Clinical Psychology Program at the University of Waterloo. I work as a Doctoral Associate at Young Minds Psychology providing assessment and therapy services to children, adolescents, and parents. I completed my pre-doctoral residency at the Toronto Area Residency Consortium (OISE at University of Toronto).
I have conducted comprehensive psychoeducational and diagnostic assessments for youth across a range of cognitive, learning, behavioural, developmental, and social difficulties. I also have experience providing therapy to clients with a number of concerns including anxiety, mood, and social difficulties. My therapeutic orientation is primarily cognitive-behavioural, with the integration of elements from other evidence-based modalities such as emotion-focused and dialectical behaviour therapies, to tailor treatment plans to meet the unique needs of each client. The relationship between a clinician and a client is fundamental to the success of therapy, and I collaborate with parents and youth to ensure that treatment process is communicative, non-judgemental, and effective. As such, I also work hard with my clients to ensure that my services are culturally informed and consider the unique diverse backgrounds of each individual.
I have extensive training in psychoeducational assessment and therapeutic intervention for children, adolescents, and adults across multiple settings including Broadview Psychology, Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB), Hamilton Health Sciences at the Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre in the Child and Youth Mental Health Outpatient Clinic program, Kitchener Psychology Centre, Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB), and the Centre for Mental Health Research and Treatment (CMHRT) at the University of Waterloo.
