This is a good question. The short answer is probably. At Young Minds Psychology we support youth through the transition to adulthood, often into their early 20s. Generally both parents attend the first appointment without their child. During your complimentary 15 minute phone consultation we will discuss your unique situation and who should attend the first appointment.
During the initial appointment we will begin to get to know your family and ask about the presenting concerns. We will go over informed consent with you, which includes our policies and procedures and how we handle your personal information. By the end of the session we will provide you with a plan for next steps. We make sure to allow time to answer all of your questions.

Generally we require that both parents provide consent for services and attend the first appointment regardless of whether they are together or separated. We recognize that relationships between separated parents can be complicated and we do our best to be sensitive to these complexities. We do our best to keep both parents involved with, and informed about, their child’s services.
As families can involve many important family members, we involve whoever makes sense in treatment, including step-parents, step-siblings, grandparents, or whoever else plays an important role in your family’s life.

At Young Minds Psychology we believe that the parent-child relationship is the most powerful key to mental health. We will work with you to learn the tools to support your child on their mental health journey so that you can confidently support them between appointments and in the years to come.
