Assessment FAQ

  • Sometimes parents come to us knowing which type of assessment they are looking for. Other times they are unsure. Your clinician will listen to your concerns and make recommendations as to the type of assessment that will benefit you most. Often times, we will be looking at more than one area of functioning at once.

If your child’s school has recommended an assessment, you should assume that they are recommending a psychoeducational assessment.

  • In order to get a thorough understanding of your child, your clinician will gather information from a variety of sources. This may include all or some of the following:

    • Interviews with parents, your child, and teachers

    • Use of standardized psychological tests

    • Questionnaires completed by parents, your child, and teachers

    • Review of historical documents, such as report cards and past assessment reports

  • Assessments generally consist of 2-5 appointments, depending on the scope of what is being assessed.

1 - The first appointment is for both parents and your child. During this appointment your clinician will confirm the scope of the assessment and go through a detailed developmental history with you and your child, to learn more about them.

2 - The middle 1-3 appointments are for testing and will be just for your child. Your clinician will communicate how many testing sessions are needed for your assessment.

3 - The final session is a feedback appointment, which will be scheduled after the last testing session.

  • We will provide verbal feedback following the assessment, which may include diagnoses. During the feedback we will create a treatment plan together that addresses your specific needs.

We will provide you with a written report at the feedback session for you to share with others to obtain support (e.g., school, doctor).

  • In addition to bringing both parents and your child to the first appointment, we will require a record of your child’s earlier functioning. Please bring any previous assessment reports and all historical report cards to the first appointment. We can either hold on to them for you and return them at the end of the assessment, or you may provide us with photocopies if you prefer not to leave us with originals. In addition, you may bring any written documentation that you think may be important for us to see.

  • We recommend that you tell your child that the assessment will consist of many different activities that will help determine their strengths and challenges so that we can help them at school, or wherever they need support.

Because assessment appointments tend to be longer and require your child’s best performance, we ask that you make sure they are well fed (e.g., do not skip breakfast) and plan for a normal night’s sleep the night before. It is helpful to pack a snack and a drink so that your child does not get hungry during the testing session.

  • The cost of assessment varies based on the scope of what is being assessed and the number of appointments required.

Our psychoeducational assessments range from $3750 - $4500 depending on the scope of what is being assessed.

We offer gifted assessments from $. The cost of social-emotional and attentional assessments falls in the mid-range between these extremes. Your clinician will confirm the scope of your assessment during your first appointment and provide you with an exact cost.
